Grief & Loss
ABOUT GRIEF & LOSS
“Grief. The pain now is part of the happiness then. That’s the deal.” – C.S. Lewis
Unfortunately we will also experience grief and loss throughout our lives, and somewhat ironically this seems to be the consequence of having lived a meaningful and sincere life. It is important to acknowledge that no two people experience grief in the same way, and any feelings that come alongside grief are your natural response to experiencing a loss in your life. Grief may last for weeks, months or even years, and it is important to seek help during the grieving period if you are struggling.
Loss means the loss of a loved one, a pet, a relationship, a job, a pregnancy or other significant thing that has meaning to you. A natural human response to loss is to experience grief. The severity of the grief we experience is dependent on the importance of the loss to you, with more significant losses resulting in more severe feelings of grief. Grief may also lead to other feeling which may further impact your wellbeing and quality of life, including sadness, depression, anxiety, anger, lost sense of identity, overwhelmed, regretful or maybe even relief.
Grief may also lead to insomnia or other sleep disturbances, loss of appetite and even weight loss, so it is important to take care of both your physical and mental health during this time. Eating healthy, exercising, talking to friends, trying to get enough sleep and seeking professional help are all helpful things that you can do to keep yourself healthy after experiencing a loss.
