Men’s Mental Health
As we face different life events, our mental health fluctuates. Certain events in our lives and the stress these create, can impact the usual ups and downs of our emotional state and wellbeing.
When the downs seem to go on and on, beyond what you consider “normal”, or go deeper than what you usually experience, this is a trigger to seeking help.
ABOUT MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH
The numbers tell one side of the men’s mental health story: one in five men experience anxiety and one in eight men experience depression at some point in their lifetime. Not surprisingly, men have higher rates of suicide in Australia, accounting for seven out of nine suicides everyday.
The social norms defining acceptable behaviour and shaping mens’ sense of self, tell another story. Men are known to bottle up their problems and tend not to seek help when they are feeling down or overwhelmed by the daily stresses of life.
The stigma around men’s mental health leads many of us to delay seeking professional help. But putting it off can bring on more severe symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mental health issues. There is no shame in getting the help you need. After all, if your car breaks down, you see a mechanic; If you have a tooth cavity, you see a dentist…seeing a psychologist is no different.
The sooner you find the courage to ask for help, the sooner you’ll overcome your struggles and get back to enjoying life and being there for the people you care about.
Typical stressors for men:
- Work related worries
- Financial pressures and the stress of providing for the family
- Relationship issues or divorce
- Substance or alcohol use or dependence
- Family or child related stressors
- Physical pain or ongoing illness
